This will be the third year that the CGI and IAMU organizations have presented an Excavation Safety Summit in Ankeny. Last year, the summit was expanded to two days to provide classroom and field training in Subsurface Utility Engineering and Excavation Competent Person training. This summit is supported by member utilities and sponsors, as well as by a grant from PHMSA for underground damage prevention activities. We have applied for another grant to help support this year’s summit.
In the previous summits, the name “Excavation Safety Summit” implied the venue would cater specifically to underground construction contractors. We intend to change the name of the summit to interest all stakeholders of underground safety for the protection of people, facilities, and critical infrastructure.
As a member of the Hawkeye Chapter of the ASSE, I would like to know if our chapter members have specific ideas related to underground safety, protection and security that they would have interest in. This could be interest in participation, observing demonstrations, or receiving education and that we might be able to provide in this summit or future summits. Input from our general industry and construction safety professionals, insurance loss control experts, underwriters, and academia is valuable to our planning processes and we reach out to the American Society of Safety Engineers for any input you may think would be of benefit to our collective organizations.
Thank you for your time and attention to this message. Any responses can be directed to me or Dave Hraha, Program Director, IAMU, 515-289-1999/800-810-IAMU, dhraha@iamu.org .
Common Ground Iowa (http://www.commongroundiowa.com/about.html) is a state-wide regional partner with the Common Ground Alliance. Our primary purpose is to promote public safety through damage prevention of underground utilities and other facilities.
